Regulatory
PuntiaVera® (Opuntia ficus indica) is a vegetable that is consumed daily in many parts of the world. As a widely eaten food, Nopal is presumed safe. It has been consumed in the EU prior to May 1997, it is exempt from the EU Novel Food procedure. References have also been made in literature in 1992 of it's consumption as a food in Europe. Hyperglycemia
At least 12 human studies have revealed consistent reductions in post-prandial blood sugar, when consuming Nopal with a meal. Reductions as high as 50% are documented and interestingly the effect was not observed in healthy individuals unless in a hyperglycemic state.

Hyperlipidemia
A recent clinical study showed a 15% decrease in LDL cholesterol and 12% decrease in triglycerides. Previous human studies demonstrated similar results including HDL increases, as have numerous animal trials, one of which indicated a mechanism of cholesterol synthesis inhibition.

Weight Management
Nearly half of the dry powder mass of Nopal is indigestible fiber which not only provides bulk, but cleans the colon after suppressing appetite in the upper GI(15-16). A high amino acid, vitamin and mineral content makes Nopal an effective and nutritious low-calorie food ingredient.
