IntroductionB-CAN™ Certified Organic Oat Beta-Glucan 70% is a soluble fiber derived from the oat's (
Avena sativa) endosperm cell walls. It is a natural polymer comprised of individual glucose molecules that are linked together by a series of Beta-(1 3) and Beta-(1 4) linkages, comprising a class of non-digestible polysaccharides called beta-D-glucans. This unique array of linking promotes several consumer health benefits. It lowers the risk of coronary heart disease by significantly lowering LDL cholesterol, hypertension, glycemic response and stimulating immune cell function. Our B-CAN™ Oat Beta-Glucan is a free flowing powder that conatins 23 times more beta glucan than typical oats. Because of its neutral taste it may be used in a wide variety of formulations in food, beverage, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industries. The FDA allows a "Hearty Healthy" claim.
BenefitsResearch Supported Actions and Benefits:
-Lowers LDL Cholesterol by an Average of 8%
-Immunomodulator Activaing White Blood Cells
-Lowers Glycemic Response
-Reduces Hypertension
AdvantagesB-CAN™ Certified Organic Oat Beta-Glucan is 10 - 12 times more concentrated than regular Oat Bran. It is a water soluble ingredient. Its preferred viscosity is ideal for beverages, foods and nutraceuticals. It is a highly palatable ingredient with a neutral taste profile. B-CAN™ contains the highest percent of pure beta-glucans available globally. FDA may allow a "Heart Healthy" claim on product labeling. Reduced risk of CVD Manufactured from Non-GMO Oats. B-CAN™ is a GRAS certified ingredient.
RegulatoryIn 2006, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its final rule allowing health claims to be made on the labels of foods containing soluble fiber from whole oats. The text from the ruling reads, "a diet high in soluble fiber from whole oats and low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease". Garuda International's B-CAN™ Oat Beta-Glucan is a GRAS food derived from oat bran according to FDA 21 CFR 101.81.
ApplicationsOat Beta-Glucan is available as a free-flowing powder that is water-soluble and has a neutral taste. It can be used in capsules, tablets, opaque liquids, semi-solid foods and other applications. It enables applications in dietary supplements, food and beverages that were not previously possible due to formulation issues. Oat Beta-Glucan, an oat-based ingredient, may enable manufacturer's to make an FDA heart health claim on their food, beverages and supplements. Oat Beta-Glucan is a highly concentrated oat fiber that provides a cholesterol-reducing benefit at a more convenient dose level than previously possible.
Blood Lipids and CHDOver 40 research studies have suggested Oat Beta-Glucan to be effective in preventing coronary heart disease by significantly lowering LDL blood cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol levels. Oat Beta-Glucan appears to promote increased excretion of bile acids which could explain, in part, its possible cholesterol-lowering activity. Because Oat Beta-Glucan binds to cholesterol-rich bile acids in the intestine, the bile acids are excreted rather than being reabsorbed. It may also promote cholesterol clearance from the plasma via reverse cholesterol transport. The most recent beta-glucan clinical trial demonstrated a 7.7% reduction in LDL-cholesterol after 3 weeks of daily oat glucan consumption as a functional ingredient in a fruit drink.
Glycemic ResponseOat Beta-Glucan has a low glycemic index(GI), meaning, it slows the absorption of glucose into the blood by delaying gastric emptying time and maintaining a high level of viscosity. This consequently affects the rate of uptake of D-glucose from the small intestine. Adding Oat Beta-Glucan can provide a 60% reduction in the glycemic index of a meal. Ultimately Oat Beta-Glucan helps prevent blood glucose and insulin from spiking, which contribute to metabolic syndrome.
ImmunomodulatingResearch indicates that dietary beta-glucans activate white blood cells and other components of the immune system. In a recent study, immune stressed animals on a diet enriched with beta-glucan were 28% less likely to become ill and 18% more likely to survive, compared to controls, due to increased macrophage activity and antiviral resistance.
DosageThe FDA suggests that the dosage of pure Oat Beta-Glucan required for a possible hypocholesterolemic effect is approximately 3 grams daily, while the whole oat-containing food must provide at least 0.75 grams of beta-glucan per serving.
